Fear is a normal and healthy emotion—even for kids!
Fear is a normal and healthy emotion—even for kids!
Helping kids understand and label emotions—like fear, sadness, or jealousy—gives them the tools to manage big feelings and build empathy. With love, language, and support, they learn that uncomfortable feelings will pass. What may seem “silly” or minor to adults (like monsters under the bed or loud noises) can feel very real to children. The good news? You can help your child experience fear in a positive and manageable way.
Try This at Home:
Notice and label fear: “You jumped when you heard that loud sound. That was scary!”
Share your feelings: “I was scared when I couldn’t find you—my heart was beating so fast!”
Offer comfort and connection: Spend quiet time in the dark if they’re afraid, or cuddle at bedtime.
Use play to explore fears: Puppets and pretend play help kids process scary situations.
Celebrate brave moments: “You walked by that dog—so brave!”
Read books about fear and feelings, and talk about what characters are experiencing.
